The Neural Bases of Event Monitoring across Domains: a Simultaneous ERP-fMRI Study.

2017

The ability to check and evaluate the environment over time with the aim to detect the occurrence of target stimuli is supported by sustained/tonic as well as transient/phasic control processes, which overall might be referred to as event monitoring. The neural underpinning of sustained attentional control processes involves a fronto-parietal network. However, it has not been well-defined yet whether this cortical circuit acts irrespective of the specific material to be monitored and whether this mediates sustained as well as transient monitoring processes. In the current study, the functional activity of brain during an event monitoring task was investigated and compared between two cognit…

Functional Information, Biomolecular Messages and Complexity of BioSequences and Structures

2010

In the quest for a mathematical measure able to capture and shed light on the dual notions of information and complexity in biosequences, Hazen et al. have introduced the notion of Functional Information (FI for short). It is also the result of earlier considerations and findings by Szostak and Carothers et al. Based on the experiments by Charoters et al., regarding FI in RNA binding activities, we decided to study the relation existing between FI and classic measures of complexity applied on protein-DNA interactions on a genome-wide scale. Using classic complexity measures, i.e, Shannon entropy and Kolmogorov Complexity as both estimated by data compression, we found that FI applied to pro…

Complete Genome Sequence of Lactobacillus rhamnosus Strain BPL5 (CECT 8800), a Probiotic for Treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis

2016

ABSTRACT Lactobacillus rhamnosus BPL5 (CECT 8800), is a probiotic strain suitable for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. Here, we report its complete genome sequence deciphered by PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) technology. Analysis of the sequence may provide insight into its functional activity.

Novel inhibitors of mitochondrial respiratory chain: endoperoxides from the marine tunicate Stolonica socialis.

2001

The Mediterranean tunicate Stolonica socialis contains a new class of powerful cytotoxic acetogenins, generically named stolonoxides. In this paper, which also details the isolation and chemical characterization of a minor component (3a) of the tunicate extract, we report the potent inhibitory activity (IC(50) < 1 microM) of stolonoxides (1a and 3a) on mitochondrial electron transfer. The compounds affect specifically the functionality of complex II (succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) and complex III (ubiquinol:cytochrome C oxidoreductase) in mammalian cells, thereby causing a rapid collapse of the whole energetic metabolism. This result, which differs from the properties of similar known…

Adipose-derived stromal stem cells (ASCs) as a new regenerative immediate therapy combating coronavirus (COVID-19)-induced pneumonia.

2020

A coronavirus (HCoV-19) has caused the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Wuhan, China. Preventing and reversing the cytokine storm may be the key to save the patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to possess a comprehensive powerful immunomodulatory function. This study aims to investigate whether MSC transplantation improves the outcome of 7 enrolled patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in Beijing YouAn Hospital, China, from Jan 23, 2020 to Feb 16, 2020. The clinical outcomes, as well as changes of inflammatory and immune function levels and adverse effects of 7 enrolled patients were assessed for 14 days after MSC injection. MSCs …
